LAGUNA BEACH (AP) – A brush fire that came within a few hundred yards of upscale hilltop homes in Laguna Beach has been contained.

The Orange County Fire Authority said the 3-acre fire was sparked late Sunday morning in a steep canyon across the street from the sprawling Montage Laguna Beach resort. It moved up a hillside and toward about 20 homes, prompting authorities to call for voluntary evacuations in the area.

The Orange County Register reports that 150 firefighters assisted by a retardant-dropping helicopter contained the blaze in about three hours.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. One firefighter was taken to the hospital for breathing difficulties.
