(AP) – Prosecutors say a Southern California man strangled his wife and bludgeoned his 6-year-old daughter after a paternity test showed she was not his biological child.

The Press-Enterprise  reports that 54-year-old Michael Barbar of Perris could face the death penalty if convicted of charges that he plotted and murdered his wife Maysam Barbar and daughter Tamara in 2009.

Deputy District Attorney John Aki told a Riverside courtroom Thursday that Barbar received the paternity test results eight days before strangling his wife and smashing the girl’s head into a bedpost repeatedly until her skull was crushed.

Defense attorney Eric Keen said the killings were not planned but carried out in an uncontrollable rage. He asked jurors to find Barbar guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

The trial is expected to resume Monday.
